Justice 4 Krystal Evans

#JUSTICE4KRYSTALEVANS: A CALL FOR JUSTICE IN GEORGIA

On September 13, 2024, tragedy struck in Griffin, Georgia (Spalding County) when 44-year-old Marjorie Krystal Evans Mallory was shot and killed outside the Spalding County Courthouse. The shooter was her ex-husband, Thomas “Tom” Mallory, who had a long and documented history of threats and violence against her.

This devastating event — which occurred just two days after her divorce was finalized and a permanent protective order was granted — has shaken Griffin and sparked renewed debate about the effectiveness of protective orders and the need for stronger protections for victims of domestic violence.

A TIMELINE OF WARNINGS AND MISSED OPPORTUNITIES

The AJC reported that Ms. Evans Mallory had warned repeatedly that she feared her husband would kill her, even writing: “He’s going to kill me” in messages to friends (AJC).

KEY EVENTS LEADING TO HER DEATH:

  • Years of abuse and threats: Court filings and family statements describe a long pattern of harassment, stalking, and threats by Tom Mallory (WSB-TV).
  • September 11, 2024: The couple’s divorce was finalized, and a permanent protective orderwas granted. Despite this, Ms. Evans Mallory told friends she felt unsafe (FOX 5 Atlanta).
  • September 12, 2024: Ms. Evans Mallory reported violations of the protective order.
  • September 13, 2024: According to reports, her daughter and a friend requested a protective escort from the courthouse, citing specific safety concerns (AJC). Outside the Spalding County Courthouse, Tom Mallory shot and killed Ms. Evans Mallory before turning the gun on himself. He was later charged with murder (FOX 5 Atlanta).

A SYSTEMIC FAILURE

The case has highlighted systemic concerns:

  • Protective Orders: While protective orders are vital legal tools, they are only as strong as their enforcement. Victims often report violations that go unaddressed until it is too late.
  • Court Security: Requests for courthouse escorts and additional safety measures were reportedly made but not fulfilled in time.
  • Victim Safety: Advocates stress that victims need immediate, affordable access to attorneys who can navigate the process of securing a Temporary Protective Order (TPO) and ensuring it is enforced.

The AJCWSB-TV, and FOX 5 Atlanta all noted that Krystal’s warnings were clear, but the system failed to protect her.

THE SELLERS LAW FIRM, LLC: STANDING WITH VICTIMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

At The Sellers Law Firm, LLC, based in Griffin, Georgia, we know firsthand the dangers faced by victims of domestic violence. Far too often, victims do everything they are told to do — file police reports, seek restraining orders, attend hearings — only to be left vulnerable.

That is why our firm is committed to ensuring affordable, accessible, and compassionate legal support:

  • Reduced Retainers: Lower upfront costs for victims in crisis.
  • Payment Plans: Flexible options so financial strain does not prevent safety.
  • Pro Bono Services: Free representation in select cases, especially for those seeking a Temporary Protective Order (TPO).

Temporary Protective Order (TPO) in Georgia can:

  • Order an abuser to stay away from a victim’s home, work, and family.
  • Prohibit harassment, threats, or stalking.
  • Establish immediate legal protection, often within days.

If a TPO is granted, a permanent protective order can later be issued to extend those protections.

REMEMBERING KRYSTAL EVANS MALLORY

Krystal’s death is a heartbreaking reminder that domestic violence is not a private issue — it is a community crisis.

Her courage in seeking legal protection should have saved her. Instead, her story now becomes a rallying cry for stronger enforcement, quicker responses, and greater accountability in how Georgia handles domestic violence cases.
