On July 1, 2018, Georgia’s new “Hands-Free” Cell Phone law went into effect, making it illegal to handle or touch your cellular device while driving (with limited exceptions).
Whether you are expecting a call, you feel the need to post a tweet, or your best friend keeps texting you, do not reach for that phone, otherwise expect a ticket from Georgia law enforcement.
Under the new law, there are exceptions for the use of GPS, among other things, but the safe bet is to stay away from the device.
For those of you with hands-free capabilities built into your car, just plug-in your phone before you drive and stow it away. For those without hands-free capabilities, buy a mount for your phone, mount it in your car, and turn on the voice recognition software before you drive.
The Georgia Department of Driver Services has provided the new details on the license points system involving the new hands-free law:
“Effective July 1, 2018, pursuant to 40-6-241(c), all drivers operating a motor vehicle on any highway of this state are prohibited from:
- Holding or supporting, with any part of the body, a wireless telecommunications device or stand-alone electronic device.
- Writing, sending or reading any text-based communication, including a text message, instant message, e-mail or internet data.
- Watching, recording, or broadcasting a video or movie.
Penalties:
- 1st conviction – 1 point and $50.00 fine
- 2nd conviction – 2 points and $100.00 fine
- 3rd or more convictions – 3 points and $150.00 fine.”
