Super Speeder

In addition to speeding tickets, in the state of Georgia, “super speeder” tickets may also be issued.

WHAT IS A SUPER SPEEDER?

In Georgia, a “super speeder” is “any driver who is convicted of driving at a speed of 85 miles per hour or more on any road or highway or 75 miles per hour or more on any two-lane road or highway, as defined in Code Section 40-6-187.”  O.C.G.A. § 40-6-189(b).

WHAT ARE THE PENALTIES FOR BEING CONVICTED AS A SUPER SPEEDER?

Upon conviction, a super speeder designation contains specific penalties.  These penalitions are in addition to the penalties set by your local jurisdiction (i.e., the court).  “In addition to any other fines or penalties imposed by any local jurisdiction or the department, the department shall administer and collect a fee of $200.00.”  O.C.G.A. § 40-6-189(b).

WILL MY LICENSE BE SUSPENDED?

In addition to increased monetary penalties, a failure to pay this super speeder fine will result in a suspension of your driver’s license.  “Failure to pay the fee imposed by this Code section within 90 days after receipt of the notice shall result in the suspension of the driver’s license or driving privileges of the offender, and, in addition to the existing fees and penalties, a fee of $50.00 shall be assessed, payable upon the application for reinstatement of the driver’s license or driving privileges.” O.C.G.A. § 40-6-189(c).

DRIVERS UNDER 21 YEARS OF AGE

For drivers under the age of 21, sanctions are more severe.  Speeding in excess of 24 miles per hour (mph) over the posted speed limit results in 4-points being imposed on your license.  See Traffic Points List.  For drivers under the age of 21, a 4-point imposition results in a license suspension.
