Weapons Carry License Under the Microscope: Proposed Georgia Legislation Seeks to Remove Permit Requirement

SENATE BILL 319: NO PERMIT GUN LEGISLATION PROPOSED

Georgia’s Senate Bill 319 (SB 319)–concerning weapons carry license requirements–is currently making its way through the state legislature, having recently passed the Senate Judiciary Committee (a 6-3 vote with a Republican majority vote).

SB 319 would remove the requirement of applying for a weapons carry license, making it lawful for anyone–not otherwise prohibited by law–to carry a firearm.  Currently, anyone lawfully allowed to carry a firearm is required to apply for a  weapons carry license in their county Probate Court if they wish to carry a  firearm.  In Georgia, currently, you may open carry in a vehicle even without a permit.

Should SB 319 pass as it is currently written, the bill would still require background checks when purchasing firearms from a licensed dealer ir store.

Having passed the Senate Judiciary Committee, SB 319 now heads to the Senate Rules Committee at which time a floor vote will be scheduled.
